[2021] Tips and Strategies for Preparing for the HiSET Exam

How should I use the practice tests?

I have worked with many students and this question comes up a lot. Many times I find that students go straight to the practice tests and use them as study materials, but I wouldn’t recommend doing this. It’s important to know that if you see the question in a practice test, that just guarantees that that question will not be on the official test.

Students should really consider using the practice tests as an evaluation tool and not a study material. By the way, the best study materials are books and resources like the lessons and resources that we have put for you here on HSEPrep.com. Study materials are designed to help students improve their test scores, but tests help measure the performance of a student under testing conditions.

Before you start to study to prepare for an HSE exam, you should take a practice test and use it to see where you are starting from. In some cases, the first practice test can indicate that you are ready to take the official test! When you take a practice test, be sure to follow the time for the test. Do your best to answer as many questions as you can and if you don’t know the answer to a question, it is best not to guess. Only answer the questions that you think you know how to answer. If you guess in the first test, it might indicate that you are ready when in fact you should dedicate more time to practice and study.

After the test, take some time to review your results and review the questions you got wrong. If you saw that you had trouble finishing the test in time then that might indicate that you need to look at some strategies and techniques. Fortunately, we have offered various strategies and techniques here on HSEPrep.com.

In case the first set of tests don’t indicate that you are ready for the official test, use the practice tests to see where you need to focus your studies. The practice tests will tell you which subjects you might need more practice. Remember that this could also mean that you need to get more comfortable with the structure of the questions of the test. Some students might need to focus their studies on the content of certain subjects. Perhaps you saw that your knowledge of American history is a bit weak or maybe you saw that the periodic table was brought up and you were not really sure about this topic.

After a month or two of dedicated studying, take another practice test in the subject or subjects you have been focused on to see your progress. This will tell you if you improved. With this kind of approach, you will be able to prepare effectively and you will be able to use the materials the way they were designed and intended to be utilized.

The HiSET exams are made up of five separate subtests (math, language arts-writing, language arts-reading, social studies, and science).  The test questions are multiple choice and one written essay.
